ONLINE BUSINESS MANAGER, KIPLINGER.COM

Kiplinger.com is looking for a savvy business manager with the knowledge and ability to grow the Web-based businesses of one of the oldest and most trusted brands in personal finance advice and business forecasting. Applicants must have a strong background in business administration and fiscal management, combined with a keen understanding of business development in electronic publishing. We’re looking for someone eager for professional growth in a rapidly developing field.

CORE COMPETENCIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the division in developing annual/quarterly strategic plans and operating budgets; work closely with heads of Advertising, Technology Development, IT Operations, and Editorial to turn plans into achievable annual/quarterly goals and metrics; oversee financial performance of the department, ensuring that objectives are met
  • Identify, evaluate and assess viability of business opportunities including the management and expansion of existing lines of business, as well as the creation of new businesses
  • Oversee and manage the business development process and team
  • Oversee advertising and marketing budget
  • Negotiate and provide business management of key partnerships, including content partnerships, games partnerships, and others as appropriate
  • Oversee the strategy and monetization of key cross-network products, SEO, social media, and advertising network
  • Work closely with other departments within Kiplinger to develop new cross-marketing or licensing relationships
  • Closely track the online space as well as specific competitors within the space to identify trends related to online user patterns, online advertising, mergers and acquisitions, technological advancements, etc

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years experience in managing high-growth web initiatives
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working on web based businesses, preferably in the area of online publishing
  • Advanced degree strongly preferred
  • Excellent analytical and negotiating skills a must
  • Proven ability to develop and execute deals both small and large and extract maximum value
  • Experience managing a P&L; proven ability to generate ideas that drive short and long-term value for the business while controlling expenses
  • Strong foundation in search engine optimization; specifically as it relates to organic search
  • Working knowledge of website operation (revenue generation, content management systems, web analytics, performance optimization, etc)
  • Demonstrated management and leadership experience
  • Ability to create and present business plans around online opportunities
  • Familiarity with key industry tools (Omniture,Google Analytics)
  • Proficient with Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Word

Applicants should have three to five years of experience writing about financial topics such as credit, banking, home-buying, college, retirement and investing for Web sites, newspapers or magazines.

We seek an individual who can write practical, easy-to-understand articles geared toward individuals and families. Articles will appear both in the magazine and on our Kiplinger.com Web site. Preference will be given to applicants willing to locate in the Washington, DC, area to work in our offices near the White House.

Candidates must write with clarity and be able to distill complicated issues to their essence.  We are looking for someone with in-depth knowledge of federal tax matters, including the legislative process. In addition, applicants must be able to analyze the impact of tax legislation, court decisions and IRS rulings and regulations.
