I am soon to be retired educator (within the next 3 to 5 years). I have no family presently here and both my parents are now deceased. I'm not sure if I want to teach in the public school siting (but not totally out of the question, if the salary and benefits are right) but maybe I could explore the possibility of going into the government or private industries sectors using my teaching and counselor experiences as a swing board to a new career.

This survey just goes to show the flaw in the staff that you have who evaluate the given answers to your questions. When reviewing my answers, anyone with half a brain could conclude that the city that I discribed, was Los Angeles.

When selecting preferred areas as midwest and pacific I get:
1. Little Rock-North Little Rock, AR
2. Durham, NC
3. Lexington-Fayette, KY
4. Jackson, MS
5. Greenville, NC
I had no idea that North Carolina was considered the midwest or possibly pacific area. o_O

I don't get this. Ten is just too small to be useful. How could California be totally left out? The only excuse I can offer is that employment is factor #1 and the authors see California's labor problems as intractable. At the low end and working class levels, I could see this, but not at the creative and upper middle class levels.

Resident of Louisville, KY... Yes it is a great city. There are four defined seasons---each bring lovliness for life's enjoyment. However, with aging comes the need for longer seasons of warm temperatures without cold, wet, cloudy winter days. Where else but Austin, Texas in your top 10? And, most seniors would like to experience a seaside without driving hundreds of miles. Can #11,which would include an ocean view, be added?
Posted by: Tropical Girl at 05/27/2010 08:33:35 PM
WV, AL, NC, VA ~ no thank you! Empty nester looking for someplace warm and tropical with little to no crim-i-nim-i-nals!! Tired of all the crime and violence ~ Just want to live in peace with other peaceful and diverse people.... Is that asking for too much? Does such a place exist??

THERE WAS NO PLACE FOR ME. IF LIBERALS WERE HONEST THEY WOULD AGREE HOUSTON , DALLAS , SAN ANTONIO , AUSTIN , TYLER , CORPUS CHRISTI ,LUFKIN , COLLEGE STATION , EL PASO AND HUNTSVILLE (ALL IN TEXAS ) Should be the TOP 10 . Cost of living , jobs , medical care , recreation , colleges , retirement , weather , entertainment , low taxes and sports . You cannot beat TEXAS!!!!

The 8 questions don't address anything I am looking for in retirement. I am more concerned about quality of air, yearly temperature averages, friendly atmosphere, and access to entertainment such as beaches, casinos, libraries. I already live in # 5 (Salt Lake City). I am tired of the long temperature inversion which affects breathing, and the long cold weather with little sunshine. Yes, I realize casinos are bad for breathing, but at least they give a senior a place to escape life for a brief time.

NC Sucks. I live here. Gas tax is at 43 cents a gal, the state government is a bunch of criminals, Sales tax at 7% and going up. Unemployment at 16%, with teens 20%, Housing, Farming, textiles, furniture, Ind have gone BUST. . The Beaches, the mountains, the military bases, and a couple of decent cities is all NC has, and the NPS has CLOSED THE BEACHES. Looks like Florence, SC was chosen for me, or Decatur or Muscle Shoals AL

I don't think this little quiz asks for enough information. One of my suggested cities was Tyler, TX. I grew up about 30 miles from Tyler and couldn't get away from that area fast enough. I was 17 when I made the great escape from East Texas, and you won't find me moving back.

This would be far more helpful if it included the ability to narrow the search by climate (!) and availability of various outdoor recreational activities.

how do you determine that Florence, SC is the city that I should live in. I live in Va and enjoy traveling to SC Myrtle beach, but wouln't want to live there. I live on a 121/2 acre farm. There are no farms in SC that I have seen. Just the beach and boardwalk.

You can't go wrong in the state of Delaware. Center of the megalopolis hub with low home costs, low taxes and no sales tax. If your a professional then look at northern part of state above I-95 in towns like Newark, Greenville, Hockessen. Retiring look at Lewes and other beech side communities. Close to Baltimore and Philly for 1st quality health care.

I tried hard to make San Francisco come up but it did not. The City has everything from high income jobs, a variety of housing costs, free clinics if you are so inclined. There are artists and so much culture and beautiful architecture. I'm from Monterey bay area, 75 miles from SF.
Why is this type so light that you can barely edit your typos? Thanks, Lisa

The rest of the Villages, Boroughs, Towns, & Cities around Buffalo, N.Y. are the 3rd National Poorest Cost of Living Expenses that would pay more Taxe$ than N.Y.C. The State & Local Gov't Officials are too Corrupt in Higher $alarie$ besides California & Texas. My best bet is move to North Toronto, Ontario Province in Canada & get better living. More European & Asian with $$$$$$$$$ in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, & Computer Engineering Skills. Stick with the Asian Professors with Computer Skills & you get to the Top of the Class in a Canadian University

I attended the AFT Convention in Seattle, WA July 7th thru 12th and I swear that I did not want to return to Chicago, Illinois the most racist city in America by far. Seattle was relaxed, the people were friendly and never hesitant about giving directions. The clean Seattle city was spell bounding. I asked how was the city kept clean and the reply was, "Basically through service from those who were in trouble with the law". Shouldn't Chicago then be spotless???? The entire feel of Seattle was vastly differently that of most cities I've visited. The neighborhoods are diverse which is not the case in Chicago.

Okay, what happened to Dallas, Texas? I live there and love it! It's got everything a city-dweller would like, along with cost of living, income, things to do, culture, good place to rear children, great housing...your information is obviously tainted.

Interesting but I would not want to make my "where to live" choice based on any of these sources. I entered the information for my 30 something, engineer son and his 30 something attorney girlfriend. Both midwestern kids, both with numerous degrees, both living in Chicago. They are getting married soon and while they truly love living in the city they are seriously considering a move to something slightly less frenetic. They survey tells them Columbus, Ohio or Milwaukee, WI. their choice--Minneapolis. For those of you not familiar with the midwest, the only thing Milwaukee and Minneapolis have in common is that they are part of adjoining states.

Recently widowed and living on my social security. Our legislators need to get some common sense regarding the economy. COSTS SO MUCH TO LIVE.THERE.I GUESS BECAUSE OF SOME OF MY ANSWERS THS SURVEY DIDN'T INCLUDE SAN DIEGO. JUST ANOTHER DISPPOINTMENT I'LL HAVE TO GET OVER.

I found this test to be way to basic and elementary. It has nothing about lifestyle such as do you like outdoor activities. How close do you want to be to mountains or oceam; It has basic question about wanting to live in an area with college graduates and "creativetypes". But could be much more specific. I live in Los Angeles but woiuld like to move to N. Carolina, near Smokey Mountains. And also for the price of a condo here I could buy a palace there.

My understanding is that this was to provide a list of reasonable places for me to live. 1. Omaha 2. Little Rock 3. Wichita 4. San Antonio 5. Jackson made my list. I'm not surprised. I wouldn't like the winters in Omaha and don't think Jackson would be a good fit due to the poverty there. I would consider the other places, but still think there are many other options.

Housing costs are relative: If your choose less space but a more exciting city, you keep your costs lower, but the quality of your city higher than if you pick a large house in a not so interesting city.

Yuk....I would never consider any of the cities you picked for me. Don't you think weather is an important consideration...how about the level of sophistication? Art scene, regardless of income level?

I don't understand your limitations and/or criteria. We are not an abnormal couple. In our late 60's, sold our home in California, looking to relocate ... probably in the Southwest. Interested in medium-size city with some cultural interests and attractions. Medical care is obvious option. What's so hard to find?

I see all of these negative comments about Oklahoma, but I'd like to say that Tulsa and Oklahoma City are great places for young professionals and young families to start a life. In Tulsa, moreso than OKC, there is an exciting night life, arts, community events, shopping, and a growing job market (despite national averages) as well as a bolstering list of public schools to meet any criteria. We love Tulsa living...and we're not all right-wing-conservative-gun-toting-cowboys down here, ya'll! ; )

I tend to be somewhat old-fashioned in concepts and ideals...therefore, a little bit country, and a little bit Rock & Roll (lol), and largely Christian in belief system. I would like the city I live in to be that way as far as my personal style and tastes are concerned. It's often difficult to find just the packaging we want in anything I'm finding, but I would like to get as close to finding my particular taste in a city as possible...haven't really found it yet...still hoping to do so in the not too distant future.

For those of you not familiar with the midwest, the only thing Milwaukee and Minneapolis have in common is that they are part of adjoining states.

...Lived in Dallas for 5 years. 5 longest and most miserable ears of my life. Crap weather, crap public schools, crap parks, never got used to pickup trucks and shotgun racks. I'm happy for you but the next time I'm in TX will be when hell freezes over.

so I took the test and my number one is olympia washington which is right near where I'm thinking of moving, and number two was anchorage AK where I currently live, haha I guess it was accurate for me:)

My top cities seem to be Johnson City, TN and Jackson, TN, also Morgantown WV. No place in SC, NC, GA or FL showed up for retirees. I'd think Greenville, SC and some GA towns would also have low cost of living, low housing costs, and great medical care.

Recently widowed and living on my social security. Our legislators need to get some common sense regarding the economy. I am lucky to have family to help me transiiton from a caregiver (for 10 years) to an independent woman starting a new life. I don't think our goveernment gives enough help (advise) for women in my situation.

2 of my top 5 were in TX. I have been wanting to move there for the lower cost of living and better job market (I currently live in So. Cal) but my husband is not so sure...

My husband and I are on Disibility Benefits, through Social Security. Where could we retire and be able to afford a living on the income we both receive? And have things to do . Such has adventure, lakes, museums, good restraunts, nice weather for walking all year round.

Wow, I live in Raleigh,NC ! I lived in Durham and I do agree regarding the Arts,Education, and Innovative steps for improving Healthcare. I knew there would be two cities in North Carolina representing the pack..
Posted by: mary at 08/04/2010 05:16:57 PM
NO,NO,NO,NO,NO! NO TO TX. AND NO TO SOUTHEAST, AS THE WEATHER IN WI. IS BAD ENOUGH. HOT AND HUMID IN SUMMER, AND VERY COLD AND OVERCAST IN WINTER. I WOULD LIKE SAN DIEGO.BUT CA.

Posted by: Liz at 08/06/2010 01:05:45 PM
Not enough concentration on weather preferences or how weather might affect health. I get migraines from fluctuating weather and my "perfect" cities included 2 WI cities, a MO city and one in MI. Not cool.

Any comments on Cleveland,TN area for spending the winter versus cold winters in WI? Thanx.

I would like to live in a cultural hub with archeological aspects and be able to enjoy strawberry festivals and be able to be near water. I like San Francisco but not the earth quakes. I like San Diego but I am still afraid of earth quakes.

I am thinking Seattle , Wash., might be a good place to live.
Posted by: Katie at 08/19/2010 04:31:10 PM
Do you have anything on upstate SC in Greenville SC or close by?
Posted by: Jay at 08/21/2010 08:58:52 AM
My understanding is that this was to provide a list of reasonable places for me to live. 1. Omaha 2. Little Rock 3. Wichita 4. San Antonio 5. Jackson made my list. I'm not surprised. I wouldn't like the winters in Omaha and don't think Jackson would be a good fit due to the poverty there. I would consider the other places, but still think there are many other options.
Posted by: combatcrayola at 08/23/2010 11:42:52 AM
Fairly accurate. I'm moving to Ventura County, CA, which is next to the recommended Santa Barbara. Cool!
Posted by: crayola at 08/23/2010 11:43:23 AM
Interestingly accurate since I'm moving to CA soon.

...I am not sure that Texas is the place for me.
Posted by: Susan at 08/23/2010 05:35:34 PM
Housing costs are relative: If your choose less space but a more exciting city, you keep your costs lower, but the quality of your city higher than if you pick a large house in a not so interesting city.
Posted by: Susan at 08/23/2010 05:40:09 PM
Yuk....I would never consider any of the cities you picked for me. Don't you think weather is an important consideration...how about the level of sophistication? Art scene, regardless of income level?
Posted by: Eddy at 08/25/2010 05:17:53 PM
I don't understand your limitations and/or criteria. We are not an abnormal couple. In our late 60's, sold our home in California, looking to relocate ... probably in the Southwest. Interested in medium-size city with some cultural interests and attractions. Medical care is obvious option. What's so hard to find?

The best place to live is the Tri-Cities, which is where it stated was the top city for me, so this survey got it exactly right! But like the person from Seattle said, don't come here....

We love Tulsa living...and we're not all right-wing-conservative-gun-toting-cowboys down here, ya'll! ; )

I wouldn't have thought of Sringfield, IL. or Topeka, Kansas ! But it does make sense. My other cities they considered was Charleston, W.V. , Winston-Salem, N. C. , Decatur, Il., all of which I would consider.(well, maybe not Decatur,IL.).
